Let’s Make Sure School Children in Kalamazoo County
Have a Place to Call Home
In Kalamazoo County during the 2014-2015 school year more than 1200 of our school age children were homeless. (KRESA) Research shows, and any parent or grandparent knows, that stable housing is essential to children’s educational achievement, physical health and emotional development.
Together, We Can Help Kalamazoo Kids Thrive. We’re very excited to announce that the Vote YES For Kids millage is on the ballot for the Nov. 3rd, 2015 election! A yes vote will provide approximately $800,000 annually for six years (renewable) toward stable, secure housing for school age children and their families who are homeless. The millage will provide rapid re-housing and support services to children in all county school districts. The Kalamazoo County Public Housing Commission will distribute the funds to local housing nonprofits through a competitive bidding process. By reducing the stress and trauma of homelessness for children, we can significantly improve their educational outcomes and chances of success in life.
